You’re bound to have a flop every now and again!

Jude Law says he has some regrets around a particular movie role he accepted in the early 2000s.

The actor, who’s been Oscar-nominated for his roles in The Talented Mr Ripley and Cold Mountain, recently spoke in an interview about a film from 2004 that he “shouldn’t have done”.

The movie in question is Alfie, which is a remake of a 1966 film. In the film Jude Law plays a womaniser, who exploits his job as a limo driver to get with attractive women. It was a box office flop, and panned by critics and audiences alike.

In a recent interview with GQ, the actor spoke about his feelings towards the movie:

“I was in a really strong position [at that time] because I’d just had another [Oscar] nomination on the back of Cold Mountain, and for Alfie to be the film I chose to do quite soon after that, I think was a bad move.”

He explained that when saw an early screening, his heart sank as he’d hoped the film would be grittier and more meaningful.

“I just felt it hadn’t elevated [the script] and felt a little light, a little too cheesy,” he reasoned.

“I think it was made for too much money, and I was probably paid too much money, which I underestimated at the time. I kicked myself that I’d done something that was leaning into the heartthrob and the charismatic lead and it hadn’t worked,” the actor continued.

He also added that the poor reception the film got also knocked his confidence as an actor.

“As soon as you have a couple of misfires, their attention goes elsewhere. And so there’s a part of you also thinking, ‘Oh, OK, how do I get that attention back?’”

It may have been no better in terms of being “cheesy” but two years later Jude Law would go on to play one of the lead roles in The Holiday, which is still one of his best known roles today.

Jude Law didn’t bring up having any regrets around playing the charismatic heartthrob in the festive classic in the GQ interview so he’s not turned off romcoms full stop at least!
