Newcastle United are closing in on a deal for the Republic of Ireland midfielder Jeff Hendrick.

The 28-year-old, who has 54 caps for his country, left Burnley in June and is now a free agent.

It is reported that Hendrick is currently undergoing a medical as the club attempt to close the deal to take him to St James' Park in the North-East.

Hendrick was signed by Burnley from Derby for a then club record of £10.5 million in 2016. This was only weeks after starring in Ireland's Euro 2016 campaign in France.

The 28-year-old, who made 122 league appearances for Burnley, was unable to agree a new contract and formally left Turf Moor.

The Irish midfielder would be Newcastle's first signing since the collapse of the proposed takeover in July.

The Dubliner did not appear in one game since the return from lockdown as contract negotiations stalled between him and Burnley.

David Moyes was also reported to be interested in bringing the Dubliner to West Ham, however, the Hammers are expected to be hit hard financially from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Current Newcastle manager Steve Bruce has said that he hopes to bring in a couple of new signings before the transfer window closes on October 5th.

The Geordie club smashed their own transfer record last season with a £40 million move for striker Joelinton.

Newcastle are thought to be concentrating largely on home based players and Hendrick's name appeared on the list of whom the club are interested in purchasing.

Other's said to be associated with the North-East club include the likes of Manchester United defender Chris Smalling and Bournemouth's Callum Wilson.

Bruce is understood to have been handed a reduced summer transfer sum of between £25 million and £30 million for this current window. The club finished 13th in the Premier League last season.
