People who donated their Irish Water refunds have helped to house the homeless.
The Peter McVerry Trust is to open its first ever new-build housing scheme today in Dublin.
The Refund project was set up by the Simon Community, Focus Ireland and the Peter McVerry Trust. It allowed people to donate their refunds to help the homeless.
As a result, some of the money has gone towards the first ever scheme of new-build houses for the Peter McVerry Trust in Finglas.
CEO of the Peter McVerry Trust Pat Doyle said: 'We secured over €300,000 under that scheme and we put €250,000 of that money toward building two units of the 8 units. That means two of the eight units were built directly by the public.
'We're going to be giving the key to the door to eight homeless people. And a key to the door for life.
'So taking people out of homelessness and into housing and off the homeless list.'
The 8 one bedroom houses and a community building will be launched this afternoon.
The news comes as the latest homeless figures has been released.
Yesterday it was announced that an extra 234 people became homeless in Ireland last month.
That means the total now stands at just under 10 thousand.
