Ireland is banning single use plastics, including straws, cotton buds and cutlery.

Ten items will be phased out from June, and won't be available to buy here by 2021.

They include plastic plates, cutlery, straws, balloon sticks & cotton buds.

In March the European Parliament voted to ban single use plastics by the year 2021.

The European Council officially approved the move yesterday.

Mindy O'Brien from Voice Ireland has welcomed the decision.

She said "Recycling is good, but we have to look at how we prevent the creation of that waste in the first place".

England has announced it will ban plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds from next April.

Britain's Environment Secretary, Michael Gove, insists they are taking action.

He said he wants to make sure "we tread more lightly on this planet".

The EU ban on single use plastics by 2021 will ban the top ten most frequently found items polluting European beaches.
