Illicit cigarettes worth almost €2.5m have been seized in Dublin.

They were recovered at Dublin Port yesterday.

Following an intelligence led operation Revenue officers seized almost 3.5 million cigarettes as they were being smuggled into the country through Dublin port yesterday.

Value

The smuggled cigarettes were discovered on a trailer that had arrived on a vessel from Rotterdam.

The 'Winston' branded cigarettes were stashed away in 10 large metal boxes concealed within timber frames.

They have an estimated retail value of €2,415,000, which represents a potential loss to the Exchequer of €1,890,600.

Investigations are ongoing.
