Met Eireann is "fairly confident" Hurricane Lorenzo will "track close to Ireland".

It is still not clear exactly what path Lorenzo will take, but it is expected to lose power.

Forecasters here are working with the US National Hurricane Center and others to try and predict the storm's route.

The government's National Emergency Co-ordination Group will meet at 4pm today to discuss Lorenzo.

Lorenzo has travelled further east over the Atlantic Ocean than any other hurricane of its strength.

Records began back in the 1920s.

Jean Byrne, forecaster with Met Eireann, said she is "fairly confident" Lorenzo will "track close to Ireland at least, if not over it".

However, it is expected to lose power and be downgraded from hurricane strength to a tropical storm.

"We should know whether it will track slightly to the south west or down across Connacht and across the country on Thursday night", she said.

Lorezno is expected to pass over Ireland from Thursday evening, into Thursday night but "lose intensity rapidly".

Met Eireann is expected to issue either an orange or possibly a red weather warning for Lorenzo some time on Wednesday.
