The HSE says it hopes the new contact tracing app can be launched next week.
It was originally announced on March 29th.
HSE Communications Director Paul Connors confirmed newspaper reports published that day.
However CEO Paul Reid says any technical or data protection issues have now been sorted out:
"We are awaiting it to be brought to Cabinet, and approved by Cabinet."
"Once it's approved we'd hope we're in a position next week to be launching it."
Contact Tracing App - How Will It Work?
98fm's Tech Correspondent Jess Kelly explains how it's actually going to work:
"They ask 'Do you consent to running the app'."
"That means there will be a feature within the app that will then release what's called Diagnosis Keys."
"So that will then alert anyone's phone that I've been in contact with that day."
"Also that's when your phone will get to buzzing."
"But that's only if I, as the person with the app on my phone, makes that happen."
It’s been flagged for ages, but finally seems to be coming our way. Personally I don’t mind having a contact-tracing app. It’s a voluntary download and I think we already expose ourselves much more on FB. But we need to be aware of where the technology may go in the future. https://t.co/PgwnnJg4ew
