The Housing Minister says the government's decision on ending the eviction ban was a vital move to support renters.
Darragh O'Brien said the moratorium gave government the breathing space to "deliver more permanent homes".
He says the government has delivered approximately 7,000 new social homes, since the third quarter of 2022.
The government announced on Tuesday, the eviction ban would not be extended beyond the 31st of March.
Even if homeless figures increase, the Minister says the ban will not be reintroduced - adding the extension would do more medium-term damage.
Mr. O'Brien said Ireland now has more affordable homes than the country has had in a generation.
