Homeless figures have reached over 10 thousand for the first time.
February figures released by the Department of Housing show that almost 6,500 and 3,800 children are homeless.
It represents an overall increase of 277 on the previous month.
CEO of Inner City Helping Homeless, Anthony Flynn, has reacted. He said: 'Any increase in people entering homeless is unacceptable.
'We now have a repetitive narrative that government are not adequately responding to.
'Month on month we are seeing more and more families and children becoming homeless.
'160 children becoming homeless in a single month is a result of complete systemic failure on the government.
'We now have 10,264 homeless people for the first since records have been kept.
'A full re-evaluation of homeless services is required.
'Government policy has and is failing and it is now time for the Minister to consider his position and the Taoiseach to intervene.'
Homeless Figures
Fianna Fáil TD Darragh O'Brien has said the number of homeless people in the state rising above 10,000 is a shameful illustration of the Governments failed housing policy.
Deputy O’Brien said, 'The official numbers released tonight are a shameful and saddening example of failed Government policy.
'The latest figures have risen by 277 compared with the same figures in January 2019.
'The total figure of 10, 264 does not account for people sleeping rough or the hidden homeless which we know are out there.'
