A post-lockdown baby boom is on the way with a ten per cent increase in births expected at the National Maternity Hospital.

The Director of Midwifery at Holles Street says there's been an increase in the number of women registering pregnancies with the hospital.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, Mary Brosnan says that out of over 3,000 women who passed through the hospital in the past 5 months only 28 had tested positive for Covid-19.

The hospital reported women being more rested and looking after themselves better as they avoided the daily commute and worked from home, while also limiting their close contacts.

Mary Brosnan says visitor restrictions have also meant babies have had more time to bond and helped mothers to learn how to breastfeed.

Covid-19 restrictions have meant partners have been unable to attend scans, which are expected to remain in the place for the rest of the year.
