Gas rationing may become a reality for some Irish businesses this wintertime.
According to the Business Post, some high energy industries could have to reduce operations or even shut down if supply shortages continue.
Tomorrow, the Nordstream 1 gas pipeline between Russia and Germany is set to close for ten days,
However Green Party MEP Ciaran Cuffe says there's no certainty that it will return.
"There's a real worry that the pipeline won't re-open this summer and if that's the case, gas prices will continue to rise.
"The European Union is working hard to move away from dependency on Russian oil and gas but we have to move faster."
If the pipeline doesn't re-open, emergency gas rationing protocols could be introduced here, which would see gas heating in hospitals, schools and homes prioritised.
