Carved in cameo from chalcedony, a pair of moths or maybe butterflies engage in a perpetual dance. In Chinese art, pairs of facing butterflies form the rebus (pictures representing words) of ‘joyful encounter’. With their tapering tipped antennae and rounded bodies, it seems likely that these graceful creatures are moths, but it is difficult to be sure. In either case, the encounter on this delicate little snuff bottle remains one of joy #TeamMoth #TeamButterfly #Cameo #Craft #Moth #Butterfly #Mothsofinstagram #butterfliesofinstagram #naturalmaterials #ChineseArt #Joy #ChesterBeatty #FillYourHeartWithIreland #IrishMuseumsOnline #MakeABreakForIt #ConnectwithCulture #WelcomeBack (Image: Snuff bottle carved with moths or butterflies, China, 1800-1880, CBL C 0681)
