Harrington thinks the Ryder Cup will go ahead this September

Europe's Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington expects this year's event to go ahead as planned, insisting there's been no change to the situation.

His side are set to face the USA at Whistling Straits in September but the golfing calendar has been thrown up in the air by the coronavirus outbreak.

The first two majors of the year, the Masters and the US PGA Championship have already been postponed, but Harrington says it's too early to make any calls on the Ryder Cup.

"September is a long way off so there's no change to the situation at all at this stage," the three-time major winner told The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show on Today FM.

I know there's been some rumours and they had to put out a statement to say there's been no change but there's definitely no change.

I'm on the inside of these things, normally you're looking at 'anonymous source says this...' but now that I'm on the inside you go wow, it really is made up stuff!

"There was a big announcement yesterday by the PGA Tour about events being cancelled until May and now the PGA Championship has been postponed as well, so that's as far as they've gotten, until the middle of the May is where they've taken steps to."

With the Irish public in social isolation, Harrington has been taking to social media to offer some tips.

"I will be posting something new every day and trying to do something a bit more expansive as we go along. They're pretty simple things and this is more for your regular person who plays golf rather than the top-end low handicap player.

"I don't normally have much time for social media but now we're all stuck at home and I've a few lessons in my head and I thought it was a good time to get them out there.

I hope to get better at social media in the next while, I need a YouTube channel and that sort of stuff but it's all there on my Twitter."

Harrington will also be speaking to Joe Molloy on Wednesday night's Off The Ball.
