Dublin City Councillors have approved a revised plan that'll see 80% of housing at O'Devaney Gardens being used for social and affordable homes.

They voted in favour of the €7m deal with Bartra Capital by 39 votes to 18 this evening.

It comes after the developer and council officials agreed to make changes to the plan, which sees the number of social homes at the site increase from the original allocation of 50%.

Councillors had been fighting for improved terms in recent weeks after the vote on the original plan was postponed a month ago.

Speaking after the vote, Labour Council Alison Gilliland, said it was a positive for the Council and the development of the O'Devaney Gardens site.

She said: "I don't think there was one councillor in the chamber that felt wholly comfortable with the proposal that was put in front of us. But given the constraints of government funding and housing policy at the moment, it was the best of a bad deal."

However, Independent Councillor Cieran Perry said he was disappointed by tonight's outcome:

"I'm absolutely disgusted that the majority of Councillors would vote to give away public land to a private developer to enable them to make huge profits while not housing people on a site we already own."
