The 120th US Open, which was due to be played at Winged Foot in June, is set to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The first two majors of the season, the Masters and USPGA Championship, have already fallen due to the crisis and the US Open now looks set to be played late in the Summer or in the Autumn.
Organisers still intend for the US Open to be played at New York's Winged Foot according to a report in the New York Post, which cites a source in the United States Golf Association.
The source claims they "remain hopeful about late in the summer" and that the PGA Championship is likely to take place at TP Harding Park in San Francisco also in the late summer with an October date being considered for The Masters at Augusta.
Earlier this week the USGA had indicated that the US Open was likely to go ahead in its June timeslot, pending more updates on the COVID-19 crisis:
“We continue to hold the dates for the US Open at Winged Foot in June and monitor all available guidance and regulations from the CDC, WHO and other federal, state and local authorities to do what is in the best interests of the community for the health and safety of all those involved,” read a statement.
“We had previously stopped the build of our corporate hospitality tents and are creating contingency plans should we need to pivot, given that postponement is a possibility. It is premature at this point to speculate on any potential date or location changes, but we expect to make a decision sometime in the middle of April.’’
New York has been hit by 30,000 cases of coronavirus and 400 have died in the city, with the peak not expected to hit for several more weeks.
