Wild goats are to be brought on to Howth Head next month in a bid to reduce wildfires from occurring.

Dublin Fire Brigade has been battling the fires for almost a month now, while the air corps dropped 1,200 litres of water on the blaze yesterday.

Fingal County Council went out to tender for a goat herder and has secured one. The local authority plans to introduce 25 goats in mid-August, in order to reduce the vegetation growth in the area.

Councillor Joan Hopkins says this is part of a wider plan to tackle the ongoing issue of fires.

"Much of Howth would have been agricultural land and so a lot of where the gorse is, is abandoned fields where the gorse has taken over."

"The plan is to introduce the goats as they will be an effective way of keeping the gorse down."
