Gardaí across the country will be wearing body cams by the end of the year, a move that has been welcomed by the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors.
It comes on the back of a number of high-profile attacks on members of the force in recent weeks, including an officer being bitten following an incident in Ballymun and another being assaulted at a protest in Cork.
Antoinette Cunningham, General Secretary of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors, has said that "anything that can be done to speed up the process of the introduction of body-worn cameras we certainly welcome."
She added, "we do see it as an additional form of personal protection equipment, particularly lately given the amount of assaults on our members."
"We're significantly behind other police forces in neighbouring jurisdictions on body-worn cameras so it really is time that they were introduced for members of An Garda Síochána."
Figures show there were 285 incidents where officers suffered injuries during an attack last year, an increase from the 243 cases that were reported in 2021.
Minister for Justice, Simon Harris, will bring forward legislation next week for the use of body cameras.
