More than 7,500 domestic abuse charges were created last year during the Covid 19 pandemic.

The Garda Commissioner says while crime rates did fall generally in 2020, some people still tried to exploit the pandemic.

The Garda Commissioner says 2020 was an unprecedented year, which saw the highest number of gardai ever reached in the State.

Drew Harris says gardai had to work differently with local officers becoming more important than ever.

It's annual report shows €36million in drugs were seized and 8 million in cash in 2020.

Since 2016, 75 assassinations have been thwarted and 23 guns and over 2 thousand rounds of ammunition sized.

The report also shine a light on domestic abuse, with gardai making around 22,000 contacts with domestic abuse victims during the pandemic.

7,600 charges were created for domestic abuse offences – an increase of 24% on 2019.
