The French President has promised France will remain a faithful friend of Ireland for the future.

Emmanuel Macron traveled to Áras an Uachtaráin this morning to meet with President Michael D Higgins.

The red carpet was rolled out at the Aras this morning to welcome President Emmanuel Macron to Ireland.

After speaking to one another for a time, President Michael D Higgins asked President Macron to ring the peace bell.

He rang the bell three times, after which President Higgins' two Bernese mountain dogs came running over.

Referring to 9 year old Brod, Michael D Higgins said "this is an experienced diplomat" and said the "new fella" 6 month old Misneach is not as sophisticated or well trained due to the non-availability of trainers during the pandemic.

President Emmanuel Macron signed the visitor book describing France as Ireland's closest neighbour within the European Union and said Ireland occupies a precious place in the heart of the European dream.

He will now travel to meet the Taoiseach at Government Buildings, where they are due to discuss Afghanistan, Covid-19 and corporation tax.

President Macron will then go to Trinity College Dublin, and he'll finish his day at the Guinness Enterprise Centre.
