Facebook is planning to hire 10,000 people across the EU to develop a so-called "metaverse".
Founder Mark Zuckerberg says the jobs will come on stream over the next 5 years but it's unclear how many or if any of the positions will be created in Dublin.
The company’s EMEA headquarters is based here.
A metaverse is an online world where people can work, game and communicate completely online, often through Virtual Reality Headsets.
Gareth Lambe, Head of Facebook Ireland, commented:
“Facebook Ireland has played an important role in our company’s growth and success to date. Today’s announcement is a commitment to grow in Ireland and across Europe and in our long-term investment in European talent to help build the metaverse.”
Facebook says it's at the start of a journey to help build the next computing platform. It says it's about creating a greater sense of ‘virtual presence’ and that it has the potential to help unlock access to new creative, social, and economic opportunities.
