Evicted students and prisoners being released temporarily, are adding to the numbers in the homeless system, according to a Dublin charity.
Inner City Helping Homeless says there are still up to 90 people sleeping rough each night despite increased bed capacity.
CEO Anthony Flynn says there are a number of key factors causing an influx of people in to the homeless system including; "prisoners from the Irish Prison Service given a temporary release from prison and students evicted from student accommodation becoming homeless for the first time."
He says days services have been cut because of the threat of Covid-19, with many unable to shower or even wash their hands.
"With many cafes, shops, bars or libraries not open simple toilet facilities are unavailable."
He says more needs to be done to make sure that proper access to washing and sanitation is widely available;
"Outdoor showers, sanitation devices need to be implemented without delay as it could save lives.”
