The EU is purchasing another 200 million doses of the Pfizer Bio-N-Tech vaccine, with an option to buy a further 100 million.
The Taoiseach Michael Martin is welcoming the move and says the deal will add significant extra supplies of the vaccine over the coming months.
If the deal with Pfizer and Bio-N-Tech goes through, the EU would have 2.3 billion doses of a vaccine for Covid-19.
The additional doses would be delivered from April this year.
A proposal to buy 200 million doses will be put to member states, and the option to buy a further 100 million dose will be on the table.
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen says there is more than enough vaccine ordered for every European.
There is a hope from the European Commission that if needed neighbouring countries to the EU could benefit from the vaccine orders.
