A man in his 50s has been arrested after a serious assault on an elderly man in Ballybough.
The attack happened at Courtney Place in Ballybough in the north-east inner city about two o'clock this morning.
The victim was a man in his seventies, and suffered serious head and spinal injuries in the assault.
He's in a critical condition at the Mater Hospital today.
Local Councillor Nial Ring says prayers were offered for his recovery at Mass this morning, and there's serious concern among the community there.
This afternoon, a man in his fifties was arrested in connection with the assault.
He's being held at Mountjoy Garda Station, as forensic specialists continue their work at the scene.
