People who have a house party could be fined €1,000 for a first offence, rising to €2,500 or 6 months in jail for repeat offenders.
The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors says that it should be consulted before legislation is introduced to impose penalties for breaching Covid rules.
It's after a bill to introduce a range of fines was approved by Cabinet last night.
Under the proposed legislation a €1,000 fine will be imposed on someone who throws a party - with a €2,500 fine for a third time offender and a possible 6 month prison sentence.

On the spot fines of up to €500 have also been put forward for people who don't wear a face mask or those who breach the 5 kilometre limit.
In response to the new bill, the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors says that all stakeholders should be involved in discussing the introduction of new legislation.
General Secretary Antoinette Cunningham says that Gardai will only be able to issue a fine to someone for having a house party if they answer the door.
The new bill was approved following a meeting of Cabinet late last night and will now go before the Oireachtas for approval this week.
