Nine schools across Dublin could have to open late for the new term because of structural problems.

They were given the all clear after checks last year, but now need temporary safety measures put in place.

A total of 17 schools across the country are affected by the latest problems.

The nine Dublin schools affected are:

  • Luttrellstown Community College
  • Gaelscoil Shliabh Rua
  • Broombridge Educate Together
  • Scoil Choilm Community National School
  • Scoil Aoife Community National School
  • Gaelscoil na Giúise
  • Firhouse Educate Together
  • Rush and Lusk Educate Together
  • Lucan Community National School

The Education Minister says he's working to make sure all future schools are built to a better standard.

Joe McHugh described the poor building standards as an "absolute injustice" for school communities.

Last year, 22 schools built by Western Building Systems were closed for remedial works.

Now, 17 others need works to make them safe.

It's expected some of the 17 schools won't be able to open in time for the new school year.

However, it is hoped they will only be shut for 2-3 days.
