A Dublin man had to be treated in hospital after injecting himself with his own semen in an attempt to cure chronic back pain.
The 33-year-old refused to have a build up of the fluid, which he had been injecting regularly for 18 months, removed from his arm.
Details of his case have been revealed in the Irish Medical Journal, which notes there is no proof semen injections treat back pain or any other sores.
Using a needle he bought online, the man injected his own sperm into both his veins and his muscle.
Dr Lisa Dunne, from Adelaide and Meath Hospital in Tallaght, wrote in her study that there is no research to prove that semen injections are effective "for back pain treatment or other uses".
Dr Dunne added that the case "also demonstrates the risks involved with medical experimentation" by those who are untrained or haven't carried out proper research.
