The end of autumn and start of winter always feels like it's the start of Sunday roast season. Easily among the ultimate comfort food when you've had a hectic week and weekend, or the best way to share a meal with family or friends. For some of us, it's a great rehearsal too for anyone who is cooking Christmas dinner!` But sometimes, you just want to get someone else do all the work.
Now, it's worth saying here, that a roast and a carvery are two very different things! A carvery is a queue up, grab a tray, get your meat sliced up in front of you type of situation. A roast when out and about is the full experience of menus, laid tables, and ultimately the food brought out to you, piping hot and beautifully arranged.
Here ae a few spots to enjoy a really good Sunday roast in the capital
Hawksmoor
On Dublin Delish, we highlighted Hawksmoor on College Green as one exceptionally good roast in the city. Set in the magnificent former National Bank Building (or as many will remember it as Abercrombie & Fitch), you can enjoy a seriosuly stellar roast. Dry-aged beef rump, beef-dripping roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, roasted carrots, buttered greens, roasted garlic, bone marrow gravy all for €23 per person. If that doesn't take your fancy, their stunning steak menu is also available to choose from.
The Legal Eagle
After remaining closed since the pandemic, The Legal Eagle has reemerged onto the Dublin dining scene with some seriously delicious cooking going on. Throughout the week, this pub is serving exciting dishes like whole-roasted fish in a lemon, thyme, chimichurri and prawn oil or PX sherry braised ox cheek in a bone marrow sauce. But on Sunday, it's all about the classics. Striploin roast beef, roast Pigs on the Green pork belly or chicken all served with greens, spuds, yorkies and gravy. Prices range from €27 for the beef, and €24 for the chicken.
Bresson
This Monkstown favourite offers a wonderful value Sunday lunch menu with 2 courses for €34.95 or 3 for €39.95. Start with goat's cheese or mussels, take a choice of some classics like steak frites or confit duck leg for mains and end with crumble or crème brûlée. But for an supplement of €6, you can get their roast featuring prime roast beef, duck fat roast potatoes, veg & Yorkshire pudding and gravy.
FX Buckley
You can't speak about beef and roasts in the city without talking about FX Buckley. The steak specialists with locations across the city offer a fantastic Sunday roast. Served medium, which is always important to me, they offer roast rib of beef, Yorkshire pudding, creamy mash, duck fat roast potatoes, confit shallots, roast carrots & tenderstem broccoli and gravy for €22.50
The Old Spot
You can't utter "Sunday Roast in Dublin" without considering The Old Spot. They've been excelling at it for years, and it's a firm favourite with locals and visitors. Dry Aged Roast Beef supplied by Pat McLoughlin, Yorkshire pudding Duck Fat Roast Potatoes, Cauliflower Cheese, and so so much more. You really can't go wrong. Located on Bath Avenue, Sandymount, this is the perfect place to while away time on a Sunday - a hearty feed, a great wine list, plus some classic desserts.
The Butcher Grill
In Ranelagh village is The Butcher Grill, with plenty of steaks on the menu, should you so please. But their roast comes with a trio of options - of Irish beef striploin, corn fed chicken and free range pork rack. Prices range from €24-€27. With a great cocktail and wine list, this is a great spot to spend a Sunday
