Hundreds of letters are to be handed into the Taoiseach today, calling for more refuge spaces in his constituency.

'Dublin 15 Action Against Gender Violence' says as many as 500 women and their families are turned away annually from the local shelter.

The organisation says more outreach workers and a rape crisis centre are needed in the area.

Emma Quinn from the group says they will be highlighting their campaign outside the Dáil today.

She says women from the community have been campaigning for a number of weeks;

"We have letters across the constituency being signed by the people who Leo Varadkar is supposed to represent, that demand the immediate expansion of the service in Blanchardstown."

Almost 13,400 people received supports from a domestic violence service last year.

Figures from Safe Ireland, that were released yesterday, show frontline support groups helped close to 11,000 women and 2,500 children.

However the agency says a lack of resources meant almost 3,300 requests for refuge were turned down as they were full to capacity.
