Interpol has warned that criminal gangs are using food delivery services to transport drugs in Ireland.

The International Police Organisation says this type of activity is taking place during Covid-19 restrictions.

Earlier this month gardaí seized eight kilos of cocaine and two handguns hidden inside pizza boxes in Dublin.

This is a type of tactic being used by dealers to transport their products as fewer people are out in public.

Interpol has today issued a purple notice to countries around the world to make them aware of this activity.

It says some delivery riders knowingly and willingly delivery drugs, but that legitimate services have also been used as unwitting drug mules.

Deliervoo is one type of food delivery service, and it has said if a rider was involved in this activity they would be terminated with immediate effect.

Interpol has specifically stated that the countries involved in this type of transportation are Ireland, Spain and Malaysia.
