There's been a drop in the number of people who are homeless across the country.

The total figure is down from 8,702 in August to 8,656 in September, a decrease of 46.

6,259 people are recorded as homeless in Dublin.

There were 1,128 families in emergency accommodation last month, an increase of 8 on the 1,120 recorded in August.

Challenges

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD says: "While homelessness remains unacceptably high, there are indications in these latest reports of progress being made, despite the added challenges faced as we deal with COVID-19.

"I want to acknowledge the commitment of all involved in providing services to those who are homeless, in particular the local authorities and service providers who are working together to develop and implement responses in the short and medium term as we deal with this complex issue. We must all continue to work together."

Families

Dublin Simon Community CEO Sam McGuinness says: "Since the first lockdown in March 2020, we have seen a 22% decrease in the number of families in emergency accommodation.

"While we strongly welcome this consistent drop in families and acknowledge the positive steps taken by the Minister for Housing to re-introduce the ban on evictions during Level 5, unfortunately, the number of single people stuck in emergency accommodation has continued to rise over the same period.

"Since March, while there are 747 less people in Dublin emergency accommodation, the remainder, 6,259 have not moved on to a home of their own and are lodged in a bottlenecked system."
