The Court of Appeal has upheld the sentence handed down to a teenage boy, who murdered a woman in the city as she walked home on her own in 2021.
The boy, who can't be named because of his age, was handed a life sentence, with a review to take place after 13 years.
The now 17-year-old boy held up Urantsetseg Tserendorj with a knife as she made her way home from her cleaning job in January 2021.
He wanted money for drugs, and when she told him she didn’t have any, he stabbed her in the neck. She died in hospital nine days later.
His lawyers appealed the severity of his sentence on a number of grounds, including their claim that the best interests of the child hadn’t been met, as required by law.
The judges disagreed though. They described his offending as “extremely serious” and felt the sentence was appropriate given his culpability.
They also said he had a chance of early release if he works hard on his rehabilitation ahead of his review date.
The boy then stormed out of the courtroom shouting at the judges to f**k off and calling them smelly rats as he left.
