Planning permission has been granted for the development of 297 co-living units at the site of the Phibsborough Shopping Centre.

Such units are now banned following a new law introduced by the Housing Minister late last year.

However it's understood the application had been lodged in advance of the law being signed.

The application included a proposal for 321 units, but An Bord Pleanala reduced the number to 297.

Local community groups say it's deeply disappointing that planning permission has been granted "despite widespread community opposition and a national ban on new developments of this kind".

A spokesperson for the developer of the shopping centre says co-living is currently an incredibly popular accommodation choice for young professionals in multiple large US and European cities due to its design and community focus.
