A free collection service for the likes of old mattresses and sofas can't be reintroduced in Dublin city because it could encourage "dumping tourism".

Council officials say it could also land the state in hot water with the EU.

A similar service for bulky items was discontinued in the city several years ago, but last November councillors voted to fund its return. They had argued the scheme reduces the amount of rubbish being dumped.

However, management at the council say it can't go ahead as it could lead to the state being prosecuted by the EU as it goes against European, national and local policy on waste disposal.

Councillors were also told the move may encourage "dumping tourism" when non-residents or businesses from outside an area take advantage of free waste collection points according to the Irish Times.
