Chelsea sign goalkeeper Edouard Mendy from Rennes

Chelsea have moved to address their goalkeeping woes by signing Senegalese international Eduoard Mendy from Rennes on a five-year deal.

28-year-old Mendy helped Rennes finish third in Ligue 1 last season as they qualified for the Champions League for the first-ever time.

In a statement, Chelsea say Mendy will 'compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Cabalero for a starting spot between the posts in the season ahead'.

The fee is believed to be £22 million.

Kepa has suffered a crisis of confidence at Stamford Bridge, which continued when his mistake allowed Sadio Mane to score Liverpool's second goal last weekend.

It's a remarkable fall from grace for the most expensive goalkeeper in the world, who penned a seven-year contract with the Pensioners in 2018.

Mendy was born in France, but declared for Senegal, the country of his mother's birth.

He is thrilled about his new challenge:

"I am so excited to be joining Chelsea. It's a dream for me to be part of this exciting squad and to work with Frank Lampard and all of his coaching staff. I look forward to meeting my team-mates and I can't wait to get started."

Mendy follows in the footsteps of club legend Petr Cech, a current technical adviser to Chelsea, who also made the move from Rennes to London sixteen years ago.
