The members of One Direction have paid a tribute to Liam Payne following the news of his death in Argentina.

The boys came together last night to release a joint statement following the sudden loss of their bandmate.

"We're completely devastated by the news of Liam's passing," the statement read.

"In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly."

"The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever."

"For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terrible,"

The statement closed with: "We love you Liam. Louis, Zayn, Niall and Harry."

The singers went on to post individual tributes on their own social media pages.

In Louis Tomlinson's tribute, he posted a sweet photo of the pair of them performing on stage together, and said Liam was the "kind brother" he'd longed all his life for.

He also promised to be an uncle to Liam's 7-year-old son Bear and "tell him stories of how amazing his dad was."

Zayn, who would have had his public ups and downs with his former bandmate in the past, shared a frank and beautiful tribute.

The singer said that he had "lost a brother", acknowledged that they "butted heads", but saying he always "secretly respected" him for it.

He also spoke about Liam's talent and how he viewed him as a member of One Direction.

"When it came to music Liam, you were the most qualified in every sense. I knew nothing in comparison. I was a novice child with no experience and you were already a professional."

Niall Horan, having been the last One Direction member to see Liam in person as Liam had been to see him perform in Argentina not long ago, was the last the member to post an individual tribute to Liam.

In his tribute he said Liam had "an energy for life and a passion for work that was just infectious.

He said that he felt "fortunate" to have seen Liam recently, adding that he didn't know what when he was saying goodbye and hugging him that evening, that he'd be "saying goodbye forever".

"It's heartbreaking."

We're thinking off all the One Direction members, family members, friends and fans at this time ♥
