The Kildare actor is set to take centre stage in the role that shot Russell Crowe to superstardom back in 2000 when the original film was released.
In an interview with The Times, the actor revealed that he has considered the possibility of the blockbuster shooting him to the next level of fame.
“I don’t know what the difference will be,” Mescal told The Times. “Maybe that’s naive? Is it just that more people will stop you in the street? I’d get profoundly depressed if that’s so.”
But the actor went on to say what he plans to do if he gets more famous than he’d like to be.
“If the film impacts my life in that way I’ll be in a bad spot. I’d have to move on and do an obtuse play nobody wants to see.”
Gladiator II is set to be released in cinemas on the 15th of November.
