Solskjaer keen to start Cavani contract talks at Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says the club plan to open talks with striker Edinson Cavani over a new contract.

The 34-year-old joined United on a one-year deal in October and has already made a good impression, scoring seven times, helping the side climb to second in the Premier League table.

There's been some speculation Cavani may decide against taking up the option in his contract of a further year.

There is the option to extend but that will only be done if both parties agree according to the Manchester United manager.

"I can only say Edinson has done well," said Solskjaer.

"I’ve been impressed by him, he’s really gelled in the group and we’ll sit down and speak with him in the near future to see his plans and ours. It is a good discussion"

Cavani Praise

Cavani has been a willing and able presence for United up front,  providing important goals against the likes of Southampton and Fulham.

On OTBAM recently, Andy Mitten spoke about the high regard the Uruguayan is held in at Old Trafford despite a language barrier,

"He has had a good month - he had a pretty slow start to his United career because of COVID, injuries, and his ban as well.

"He is a top player, and I know that on the training ground he is one that everyone looks up to. He doesn't speak English either, but [it is] just his professionalism, his mannerisms, and his dedication.

"When I asked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer about what he brings to the team, he said 'How long have you got?'"

Manchester United face Newcastle on Sunday as they look to eat into their city rivals' ten-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

Newcastle are looking to take their first three points at Old Trafford since 2015.
