There are calls for the Government to provide more funding to tackle illegal puppy farms.
It follows Dogs Trust Ireland suspending adoptions over Christmas due to the high number of people giving away animals in the New Year.
There was a 30 per cent increase in the number of people looking to surrender their dog in January 2018 according to the charity.
Fianna Fáil Senator Catherine Ardagh says the legislation is there to clamp down on puppy farms, but its not met with enough funding.
