A Fine Gael TD is calling for the age limit to buy tobacco to be raised to 21 years of age.

Colm Burke has called for the change in order to help Ireland meet its public health target of a less-than-5 percent smoking rate by 2025.

The Royal College of Physicians had previously said in a report that smoking is a contributory factor in 4,500 deaths each year.

Mr. Burke says more needs to be done to continue the downward trend in smoking because we are now noticing an increase in the number of young people taking up the habit.

"I think we need to take decisive action now to try and see what sort of work needs to be done in order to reduce down the levels of people smoking".

According to the Census results from 2022, 13 percent of people in Ireland smoked either daily or occasionally, with a higher prevalence of smoking among those aged in their 20s and 30s.

The Census also found that men are more likely to smoke than women across all ages.

Disposable vapes have been considered one of the main reasons for young people developing nicotine addictions.

The Government has approved of new legislation, which will see the sale of vapes to those under 18 becoming illegal. This was due to be in place by July of this year.

Currently, you must be over the age of 18 to buy cigarettes and tobacco.
