A Dublin councillor is calling on local authorities to hire 'social distancing wardens'.

Joanna Tuffy says it would help stop crowds gathering on streets outside pubs, preventing what happened in parts of Dublin city centre on Saturday night.

It's claimed many people out socialising were failing to stick to social distancing rules.

Labour representative on South Dublin County Council, Joanna Tuffy, says the wardens would have powers like those of school wardens;

"School wardens operate under the authority of local councils and An Garda Síochána and they have some powers so for example can stop traffic.

So I'm suggesting that social distancing wardens would be similar, that they would have limited powers so that they could actually have powers to disperse large groups of people in streets and to ask people to maintain social distancing."
