A Dublin TD has called for an e-scooter scheme for the city, similar to Dublinbikes.

Fianna Fáil's John Lahart says now is the perfect time to pass legislation for electric scooters; "People are being advised to avoid public transport where possible, so why not give serious consideration to introducing an alternative method of transport."

He says they should be properly regulated in terms of speed and being GPS enabled. However Deputy Lahart says we're yet to see the results of last year's public consultation on the scooters;

"We see more and more people starting to use them as a means of getting to and from work. Given the current health and safety measures in place across the country, we really need to seriously examine a more permanent introduction to the use of electric scooters in the city."

He wants the local authorities to engage with private providers to come up with a scheme like Dublinbikes.

Stationless e-scooter rentals are already available in a number of European cities including Brussels.
