A west Dublin councillor says bus drivers concerned about anti-social behaviour should only withdraw services as a last resort.

Earlier this week, National Bus and Rail Union delegates voted to stop public transport services in the weeks before Hallowe'en.

Union boss Dermot O'Leary said staff were taking a stand for safety -- and might not wait until October.

But Local Fianna Fáil councillor for Tallaght Charlie O'Connor says bus services needed to be kept running as far as possible.

"Only in extreme cases should the bus service be withdrawn from our communities, and certainly when it does happen and has to happen, proper notice must be given so that the public can be informed and can make other arrangements if possible," he said.

"I have no hesitation in strongly condemning those who cause problems for our bus drivers and our bus services, it's deplorable," he said.
