An investigation has been launched into claims builders working for Dublin City Council paid "protection money" to stop harassment at sites in the capital.

Housing minister Eoghan Murphy has appointed a barrister to lead the statutory review.

Last month the Criminal Assets Bureau told the High Court that "security" or "protection money" was being paid to gangland figures to allow social housing be built in Cherry Orchard.

Local Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh says the terms of reference of the inquiry don't go far enough;

"Yes it is correct to look at Dublin city council's role in this but it has to be beyond that. We're being told is that this is a practice which is not just confined to this area but is quite widespread across the board."

He says he raised concerns two years ago, and believes more payments may yet emerge.

Senior Counsel Patrick Butler is due to report back to the Minister for Housing by December 9th.
