Leaving Cert students are likely to get a predicted grade, if the state exams cannot be held.

The Department of Education wants to hold the Leaving Cert at the end of July, but this will only be possible if public health officials feel it can be done safely.

A Department spokesperson says a number of back-up options are being considered, but predicted grades are the front-runner.

The exams were due to begin at the start of June but the start date was pushed out to July 29th because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Children's Rights Alliance CEO Tanya Ward feels students should be given the choice of both scenarios;

"I think the uncertainty is very unfortunate because we know from young people themselves that they're finding the stress of not knowing whether the Leaving Cert is going to progress, it's causing a huge burden on them.

I think they need to give young people the option to either sit the Leaving Cert or proceed through predictive grading."

She says some students are likely to benefit from doing the exam while other will benefit from the predictive system."
