A baby boy has died after being found seriously injured under his mother's body.
The incident happened at Cork University Maternity Hospital on Monday morning.
The 36 year old mother was discovered unresponsive on the floor of her hospital room.
The newborn passed away shortly after 7pm last night despite efforts to stabilise his condition.
Journalist with the Irish Independent Ralph Riegal outlines what is believed to have happened.
He said: 'The mum may have been breastfeeding her baby when she suffered a medical episode.
'It's believed she was either trying to get out of the bed to raise the alarm. Or reach the bathroom when she collapsed.'
As a result, a full medical investigation is currently underway.
The woman had two other children.
