Armagh have confirmed that Jarlath Óg Burns was taken to hospital after yesterday's Ulster Football semi final replay defeat to Cavan.
The midfielder was taken off with two-minutes of normal time remaining in Armagh's 0-23 to 0-17 loss in Clones. The Irish Sun claimed this morning that Burns left Clones in an ambulance.
It was thought that Burns was still suffering from the effects of a head injury sustained in the drawn game a week ago. Burns was replaced by Charlie Vernon during extra-time of that drawn game following a collision with an Armagh team-mate. Armagh assistant manager Jim McCorry told The Irish News at the time there was "no indication" that Burns had sustained a concussion.
GAA rules preclude players from returning to the field for a full 7-days if they've been diagnosed with a concussion. However, Armagh officials insist Burns was suffering from dehydration. Regardless, the 21-year old Silverbridge man was taken to Cavan and Monaghan hospital to be assessed.
Armagh GAA released a brief statement this evening, seeking to clarify Burns' condition:
"We can confirm that following yesterday's game Jarly Og Burns was taken to hospital.
He was discharged shortly after arrival and returned home last night.
Our experienced medical team will continue to assess and monitor Jarly Og".
Burns has been one of Armagh's standout performers this year, and Kieran McGeeney will be hopeful the son of All Ireland-winner Jarlath Burns will be fit for their All Ireland second round qualifier with Monaghan. That game is already confirmed for Clones.
