The go ahead has been given to knock down one of Dublin's biggest Catholic churches.
A much smaller building will replace it, while housing for older people is also planned for the site in Finglas.
The Church of the Annunciation in Finglas West, with capacity for 3,500 parishioners, was constructed in the 1960's during a church-building boom.
The Church announced three years ago that it was to knock down the building because of falling attendance numbers. It also said it could no longer afford the upkeep.
According to the Irish Times, the city council has approved its demolition, with plans to replace it with a church that will be 10 times smaller.
It will have space for just over 300 people.
The rest of the land will be used for housing for senior citizens, believed to be around 50 units.
While a neighbouring six acre site is expected to be sold to the council. St Fergal's Field has space for more than a hundred apartments but is surrounded by three schools.
It's understood the local authority dropped plans for housing on the site over problems with access.
Negotiations are now believed to be underway with the HSE about using the land for a primary care centre.
