Thousands of older people have held a protest over government plans to take medical cards off some of the over-70s.

During today's demonstration, around 100 elderly people broke away from a larger demonstration being held at Leinster House.

They stopped traffic at O'Connell Bridge, and called on students at Trinity College to join them, as they marched through the college campus.

Five years ago, a protest of elderly people forced Fianna Fail to pull a u-turn on planned budget cuts.

The party says there's no shame in it, but Enda Kenny's ruling out any reversal.

This year's budget has been tough on older people - the phone allowance and the bereavement grant have also been scrapped - and the prescription charge has increased to two euro and fifty cent.
