There were two wins out of two for the Irish Boxers at the World Championships in Kazakhstan this morning. Michael Conlan eased to within one win of claiming at least a bronze medal following an emphatic victory in Almaty. The Belfast Bantamweight recorded a shut out unanimous decision (30-27,30-27,30-27) win over Mexico’s Brian Gonzalez. Number 2 seed Conlan will now meet Russia’s Vladimir Nikitin in the last-eight on Wednesday.
Jason Quigley completed a good morning for Billy Walsh and co with a unanimous (30-27,30-27,29-28 decision over Scotland’s Aston Brown in the middleweight class. The Donegal man, the No. 5 seed in Almaty, will now meet Hungary’s No. 4 seed Zoltan Harsca in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
Tommy McCarthy will be in action this afternoon seeking to become the third Irish boxer to make the last-eight.
