Controversial plans for more than 600 homes on land in Dublin 4, previously owned by RTE, have been given the go ahead.

611 apartments and three townhouses are to built on the site at Montrose despite nineteen objections to an Bord Pleanála and an unsuccessful High Court action.

It also includes a childcare facility, two cafés, residents’ facilities and a gym.

The scheme, which includes nine apartment blocks ranging in height from four to ten storeys, was described by local resident Dermot Desmond as akin to the "Ballymun Towers, South Dublin".

The billionaire businessman had also warned the development could become "modern-day slums".

In it's decision, An Bord Pleanála said that while the "increased height contrasts with the surrounding
residential and institutional developments, it represents a reasonable response to its context and is stepped down at site boundaries to reduce impacts on adjacent properties and protected structures."

29 conditions have been attached to the decision.
